LWD Imaging in Formation Evaluation
Knowing the downhole structure is critical in today’s challenging geological environment to achieve best well placement and best reservoir recovery.
The more “unknowns” in your downhole environment the greater is your risk. The risk of slowing or stopping your drilling schedules to accommodate evaluation – particularly when well trajectories make coring or wireline difficult or impossible. The risk of wellbore deterioration over time. The risk of failed wellbore placement. LWD azimuthal images mitigate these risks, providing high-quality data in real time for immediate evaluation—and immediate decisions. The downhole environment is no longer invisible.
Downhole logging while drilling images help operators to make more informed decisions during real-time and post-well analysis. Depending on the image technology it gives you different image types with different resolutions depending on the operator’s needs images can be used for borehole integrity management, wellbore placement, geological evaluation as well as structural and sedimentological characterization.
This presentation gives a quick introductory into downhole imaging and how to read an image properly as well as an overview of logging while drilling azimuthal images of different types. Examples will illustrate the differences in resolution and give an idea what is possible in terms of formation evaluation with downhole images.
