Tectonic history
The Penal/Barrackpore anticline formed as a result ofmiddle Miocene compression that occurred in response to the oblique collision of the Caribbean and South American plates. A transpressional episode occurred occurred during the late Pliocene causing rejuvenation of faults and additional folding.
Regional structure
One of a series of east-northeast- west-south west-trending en echelon anticlinal structures found in the Southern basin of onshore Trinidad.

Southwest-plunging Penal/Barrackpore anticline with a regional tilt of approximately 110 toward the south west.
