Department of Civil Engineering, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad

The preparation of landslide hazard maps forms the major part of a joint project of the Civil Engineering Department of the University of the West Indies and the National Institute for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology.

The objectives of the project are as follows:

(1) To identify landslides and their frequency of occurrence in critical areas in the Northern, Central and Southern Ranges of Trinidad.

(2) To determine the topography, geology, hydrogeology and soil properties associated with landslides in the critical areas.

(3 To investigate the influence of climate vegetation and other environmental factors which contribute to landslides.

(4) To develop techniques for predicting the occurrence and magnitude of landslides.

(5) To prepare maps indicating susceptibility to landslides for guidance in planning and executing developmental works.

The maps and photographs which are for exhibition are associated with objectives (1) and (2) above. These are useful in establishing virgin susceptibility maps which form the basis of any regional or national landslide hazard assessment or zonation.
