COMPUTERIZATION EXPERIENCE IN AN EXPLORATION GROUP
A. de Ia Bastide
Trinidad and Tobago Petroleum Company
Limited (TRINTOPEC)
Computerization of Tnntopec's Exploration data was renewed in 1985 with the design of a Geological Module for the
Company's Well Information System. Development and subsequent program testing for the Geological Module was followed
by the data entry phase during which several problems were encountered. These included inconsistent sources of
information, programming errors and incorrect data Input. The latter problem was resolved with data verification
programs, re-checking of erroneous data fields and improved quality of personnel.
To date, the benefits of the Geological Module include efficient data storage, rapid retrieval of information and
generation of useful queries.
In order to complete the data capture of information in the Exploration Group, digitization of Trintopec's electric
logs was considered desirable. It became evident that digitized logs and its application software could afford
the Company very significant benefits such as timesaving and more accurate well correlations. The latter will ultimately
lead to a higher drilling success ratio and greater oil production.
To maximise the benefits of the Geological Data Base and digitized logs, acquisition of a mapping package was considered
essential. Additional benefits include more accurate maps and three dimensional presentations.
Completion of Data Entry in the Geological Module will be followed by log digitization and acquisition of mapping
software and hardware. In addition, Computer Aided Draughting (CAD) and Map Digitization Software will be acquired
for the Geological Drawing Office. The complete integrated system will be expanded in subsequent years. A detailed
economic evaluation performed on the above-mentioned computerization plan proved it to be economically feasible
over a five-year period becoming more economic over a longer time span.
