CRETACEOUS PALYNOLOGY OF VENEZUELA
IRAIDA PAREDES and ARMANDO FASOLA
Intevep, S.A. APDO 76343,
Caracas, Venezuela 1070-A,
Palynological Studies carried out during the last ten (10) years at INTEVEP, S.A. have revealed the presence of
a number of well-preserved palynological assemblages, in surface and sub-surface samples, in different regions
of Venezuela.
In Western Venezuela (Tachira and Merida States) there is a good representation of terrestrial and marine palynomorphs
spanning from Barremian to the Maastrichtian in surface sections. They are also represented in some wells within
the Maracaibo Basin.
In the Eastern Venezuelan Basin, the biostratigraphic sequence is less continuous than in the West, with good terrestrial
assemblages specially characteristic of the Middle Cretaceous.
The terrestrial Middle Cretaceous assemblages are characteristic of the ASA phytogeographical province postulated
by Brenner and Herngreen for the Cretaceous of Africa/South America. On the other hand, in the uppermost part of
the Cretaceous, it is possible to establish the presence of the Malloy suite of dinoflagellates, which is characteristic
of the northernmost South American and african continints and the middle Atlantic basin.
