QUANTITATIVE ESTIMATES OF TAR/OIL FROM SURFACE TAR/OIL SAND DEPOSITS, TRINIDAD, WEST INDIES
WINSTON T. RAJPAULSINGH
Department of Civil Engineering, University of the
West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad
Current literature reveals a number of oil seeps and oil impregnated sands with a large and
exposed asphalt deposit (pitch lake) in the SouthernBasin, Trinidad. These were found to be closely associated
with the sub-surface oil producing fields of Southern Trinidad.
These surface oil-impregnated sands are usually referred to as tar sands or oil sands. In terms of their economic
potential, sixteen separate tar/oil sand deposits are targeted for appraisal and evaluation.
Quantitative estimates of tar/oil in place in these deposits will be based firstly on surface geological appraisal
and data, and secondly on additional sub-surface information and interpretations. The objective being to outline
evaluation methods using different data sets leading up to the definitive quantitative estimates.
