GEONEWS

Bulletin 1, February, 1995

THOUGHTS OF THE EXECUTIVE

Dear Members, welcome to the first issue of the Geonews. This bulletin is not intended to replace our regular newsletter, but is an attempt to improve on a timely basis, the communication process between the Executive and the general membership.
Geonews will be printed (published is too strong a word), on a bimonthly basis, and will deal in a succint manner with all ongoing matters pertaining to the business of your Society.
Communication from members will be accepted for input into the bulletin, however please be reminded that brief is our operative word.
We hope you enjoy our efforts at keeping you informed, and feedback for improvement will be greatly appreciated.

NEW EDITIONS OF THE GEOLOGICAL MAPS OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

At the request of the Ministry of Energy, AMOCO Trinidad Oil Company has agreed to provide financial support for the preparation of new editions of Hans Kugler's celebrated geological map of Trinidad; and J.C. Maxwell's geological map of Tobago. This important project is being conducted under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy, and additional funding for this effort will be provided by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.
The primary objective of this exercise is to create digitized versions of both geological maps, together with supporting sheets illustrating the various tectono-stratigriphic models proposed. An explanatory booklet will accompany the maps.
In order for this project to be successful, it is important that all GSTT members give serious consideration to any input which they can make, to correct those areas of the geologic maps that require attention.
A coordinating committee comprised of Ms. C. Roberts, Ministry of Energy; Mr. W. Ali, PETROTRIN; Mr. J. Saunders, Honorary GSTT Member, Yorkshire, England; Mr. B. Eggertson, AMOCO Houston; and Mr. S. Ali, AMOCO Trinidad; has been established to ensure that this valuable exercise is completed by the end of 1995.
As a result the following timetable for implementation has been proposed: Submission of suggested changes to present geologic maps: March 31, 1995.
a. Submission of suggested changes to present geologic maps: March 31, 1995.
b. Review of suggested changes by Coordinating Committee, culminated by one day symposium on the subject. Mid-April, 1995 (Symposium to be hosted by the GSTT).
c. Review of preliminary version of new map editions: July, 1995 (At GSTTICaribbean Geological Conference)
d Additional changes and final preparation: August-December, 1995.
It should be noted that the geologic maps of Trinidad and Tobago are 36 and 47 years old respectively, and therefore several important changes should be forthcoming based on geological work carried out over the last 30 years. GSTT members once again are urgently requested to contribute to this exercise wherever possible. Contributions can be submitted to any member of the Coordinating Committee or to the Executive of the GSTT.

MAINSTREAM EVENTS

Technical Sessions:

Mrs. E. Cozier-Abdullah of PETROTRIN gave the first technical session for the 1994/1995 period on November 30, 1994. Her topic was "Depositional Environments and Diagenesis of the Upper Wilcox, East Seven Sisters Field, Duvall County, South Texas". Our gratitude to Eleanor for a well informed presentation.

Mr. J. Chen of the Institute of Marine Affairs will be giving a technical presentation on March 07, 1995. Further details will soon be provided.

Field Trips:

A bumper attendance (48 people in all) comprised of GSTT and SPE members, Geography Teachers, Students and family members, attended the field trip on "Deforestation, Hillslope Development and Landslide Hazard Potential - North Coast Road on January 28, 1995. This outing which was led by Mr. Stanley Wharton of PETROTRIN achieved our objectives of reinstating field trips, assisting our educators with disseminating relevant information to the Nation's students, and establishing links with other organizations (namely the Geography Association of Trinidad and Tobago), Thanks a million Stanley for a job well done.

Stanley has also provided us with copies of the Newsletter of the International Landslide Research Group. Please contact the Secretary for copies if you wish to review this document.

Mr. C. Ramroop of PETROTRIN will lead a field trip to the western Central Range on March 18, 1995. Further information on this event will soon be sent out to membership.

GEOPHYSICAL INTEGRATION COMMITTEE

The Geophysical Integration Committee has been formed by the AAPG in order "to promote better

,and more complete integration of geological, geophysical, petrophysical, and reservoir engineering data. The Committee has 6 active subcommittees:

• 3-D Integrated Seismic Atlas.

• Gravity-Magnetics Case Histories Book.

• Stratigraphic-Structural Study Set for College Teaching.

• Best of AAPG/SEG.

3-D Visualization Workshop.

Geophysical Notes in the EXPLORER.

This committee has a membership of 58, and the GSTT is represented by our immediate past President, Mr. Eric Williams. Feel free to contact Eric at PETROTRIN, Pointe-a-Pierre for any further information on the activities of this AAPG Committee.

CONFERENCES

3rd GSTT and ]4th Caribbean:

Plans are well underway for the 3rd GSTT and 14th Caribbean Geological Conference which will be held at the Trinidad Hilton from July 1621, 1995. Over 1000 second circulars have been sent out, both locally and internationally, and members are reminded that abstracts must be submitted by February 28, 1995 to the Conference Committee.
