WORLD ENERGY CONFERENCE 1983
The Trinidad and Tobago National Committee of the World Energy Conference organised and hosted the first National
Energy Conference at Farrell House Hotel, Claxton Bay, on July 13 and 14, 1983.
This conference which was first held in London in 1924 as the World of Power Conference, was chaired by Dr. L.
Saith and opened by Mr. Patrick Manning, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.
Participants in the conference numbered over 140 ( including 40 speakers) and comprised a mixture of all the disciplines
involved in some way or another in the world of energy, including managers, planners and technologists of the private
and public sectors, and other interested persons.
The theme of the conference as expressed by Dr. L. Saith was "Trinidad and Tobago in the world of energy and
its objective is to increase the understanding and awareness of the role of energy and its implications for the
economy of Trinidad and Tobago". Several excellent technical papers were presented on topics such as energy
resources, generation, utilization and conservation, financing, marketing and pricing.
At the end of the conference, most participants felt the conference was a great success with knowledge being shared
by all on aspects of energy which is so intricately related to the economy of Trinidad and Tobago. In the final
analysis, a common view held by most was that we had to produce energy more efficiently and use it judiciously
and efficiently to maximize its benefits.
