· A Trinidad Geological Conference was held from 18 - 27 April 1939 under the auspices of the Petroleum
Association of Trinidad. Seventy five geologists from England, Holland, Switzerland, Barbados, Venezuela, Guyana
and Trinidad participated in this Conference and papers presented included:
Summary Digest of the Geology of Trinidad - H.G. Kugler (T.L.L.) The Classification of Rock Units and the Definition
of Formations in Trinidad - K. Schmid (T.L.L.) Our Present Knowledge of the Geologic History of Trinidad - H.G.
Kugler (T.L.L.) The Pozon and El Mene de Acosta
Type Sections of the Agua Salada Formation - H.H. Renz (T.L.L.) and H.H. Suter (T.L.L.)
A note upon some Recent Additions to the Upper Cretaceous of Trinidad, B.W.I. - A. F. Gunther (U.B.O.T.) and G.R.J.
Terpstra
(U.B.O.T.).
A note upon the Biche Quarry Limestone, Trinidad - A.G. Hutchinson (U.B.O.T.) and G.R.J. Terpstra (U.B.O.T.).
Six Field Trips covered areas such as the Northern Range, Manzanilla, Central Range, Marac/Morne Diablo, Southern
Oilfields, Five Islands and Patos Island.
· The world record for an extended reach well was drilled by Esso Australia in the Bass Straits offshore
Australia, with a lateral displacement of 15,082', almost twice the true vertical depth of 7,974', and at an angle
of 69-72 0. According to the AAPG Explorer (August
1988) Conoco (U.K.) Ltd., has proposed drilling a well in the North Sea with a lateral reach of up to 6 miles,
which is double the current world record. The proposed well would have a lateral displacement of between 28,000
and 32,000', with a true vertical depth of 12,000', and would begin to deviate from vertical at 1,000', building
to a constant angle of 740. An April 1989 spud date
is targeted for the well and an estimated 225 days will be needed to drill, test and complete the well. The entire
research project will cost $40 million and the results will be of immense value in reducing the costs of developing
future deep water and frontier oil and gas fields located in hostile environments.
· According to the August 1988 issue of the US magazine FORTUNE, and based on 1987 data, the 12 largest
oil companies in the world by sales and profits are Royal/Dutch Shell, Exxon, Mobil, British Petroleum; Texaco,
Chevron, Enti Nazionali Idrocarburi, Elf Aquitaine, Amoco, Occidental Petroleum, Atlantic Richfield and Petrobras.
These 12 oil companies are included in the 50 largest industrial companies in the world, which employed 8.8 million
people, brought in sales of $1.5 trillion, with profits of $56 billion.
