GSTT UPDATE |
· Some of the topics to be presented at monthly technical meetings in the coming months include: Techniques
for estimating permeability from grain size and porosity measurements on sidewall cores - W. Milne-Home, University
of New South Wales (January 1989); Biostratigraphic Concepts and the tropical planktonic zonation of the Cenozoic
- B. Carr-Brown, Trintoc (June, 1989); Significance of Geothermal Gradient Anomalies in Petroleum Exploration
- K. Rodrigues, Trintoc (August 1989).
A Field Trip to the Central Range to look at outcrops of Miocene carbonates is scheduled for January 1989 and will
be led by P. Faran (Amoco).
· A GSTT Seminar/Workshop on the origin, geology and production of heavy oil in Trinidad is scheduled for
the middle of 1989. The GSTT seminar is being planned as an annual event as suggested by the membership following
the highly successful inaugural seminar on the Stratigraphy, Structure and Petroleum Geology of Trinidad held in
July 1988.
· The first meeting of the Organising Committee for the 2nd Geological Conference of the GSTT was convened
on September 15, 1988. The structure of the Organising Committee and of the Sub-Committees was discussed and decided
on as follows:
Organising Committee: Chairperson, Business Secretary, Technical Secretary, Treasurer and Editor.
Sub-Committees: Technical (comprising Programme. Field Trip, Symposium and Poster subcommittees), Fund-raising
and Publicity, Registration/Accommodation and Editorial.
Both the Organising Committee and Sub-Committee Chairmen will be appointed at the next meeting scheduled for November
30, 1988.
The Executive is soliciting suggestions for a general theme for the 1990 Conference, as well as for the planned
symposium. Please send your ideas to the Editor.
· The Recent Advances in Caribbean Geology Conference scheduled for November in Kingston and put on by the
U.W.I., Mona and the Geological Society of Jamaica suffered a major setback as Hurricane Gilbert devastated Jamaica.
The Organising Committee for that Conference solicited funds from private, public and international organisations
in an attempt to raise $3,500.00 (US) required for printing abstracts and proceedings and secretarial assistance
etc. The GSTT's executive agreed at the October monthly meeting to contribute $1000.00 (TT) towards the conference
budget in recognition of the University's significant role in training Caribbean geoscientists and in support of
our kindred society staging an international geological conference. We are happy to report that the Conference
came off as planned and was a success as reported in this Newsletter.
· The GSTT and the Curator of the National Museum, Mrs. C. Broadbridge are currently drafting a proposal
for the reorganisation of the geological and petroleum exploration exhibition at the National Museum in Port of
Spain, including an estimate of funding required. The project is scheduled to be completed in three stages by the
end of April 1989, and the GSTT is represented by B. Carr-Brown and E. Williams.
· Stratigraphic Sub-Committee: Oil companies active in Trinidad and Tobago were asked if they would make
their current stratigraphic charts and type well logs available to the Subcommittee. Also, the International Commission
on Stratigraphy (ICS) was approached for advice on the International Stratigraphic Code and an improved format
for a lexicon, if any.
To date, replies have been received from the following companies -Amoco, Texaco, Trinmar, Trintoc and Trintopec.
All have responded favourably to the request but some further details have to be completed.
With regard to the ICS, the Chairman has written that there is no standard format but an example similar to the
existing Lexicon for Trinidad and Tobago was sent. A copy of the International Stratigraphic Code has yet to be
acquired. However, copies of the Stratigraphic Code of the American Commission on Stratigraphy have been circulated
to all members.
For the Field Guide, members of the committee are engaged in plotting the locations of known outcrops and other
features of interest onto the eight 1:50,000 sheets of the Kugler map. Final collation should take place before
year end. Dr. Arthur Snoke has indicated that he will be most willing to help in any way possible in both the Stratigraphic
Lexicon and Field Guide
· Tom Bower, retired Textrin geologist, passed away on Monday October 31st, two days after the GSTT made
him an Honorary Member. He leaves to mourn his wife, Anna, and 5 children and the Society wishes to extend its
sympathy to the Bower family in the loss of their loved one. A biography of Tom Bower will appear in the April
1989 Newsletter.
