BOOK REVIEW

The Transactions of the 11th Caribbean Geological Conference which was held in Barbados, July 20-26, 1986 have been published in 1988 and posted to Conference participants. As observed by the chairman of the Conference, Leslie Barker, in his foreword, the publication of these Transactions 2 Years after he Conference now seems to be the norm for the Caribbean Geological Conference; the 6th in Margarita (1971) was published in 1972, the 7th in Guadeloupe (1974) in 1976, the 8th in Curacao (1977) in 1978 and the 9th in the Dominican Republic (1980) in 1983. The 10th Caribbean Geological Conference was held in Cartagena, Colombia in August 1983 and the Transactions have not vet been published.
The Chairman must be complimented for getting these Transactions published considering budgetary constraints, the small publications review committee and the very little time available. The Transactions comprise 505 pages covering 39 technical papers including the following topics: Carbonates and Biostratigraphy in the Caribbean (8) Sedimentology and Geology of Modern Cultural Problems (6), Tectonics in the Caribbean (6). Mineralogy and Geochemistry (8), General Caribbean Geology (8) and Petroleum Geology (3).
The page numbering system whereby the pages in each paper are numbered separately seems somewhat odd and the papers are therefore not easily referenced. While most of the text figures are legible and well drafted some of the photographs included are poorly reproduced (e.g. those in papers 18, 20 and 26) and detract from the overall c1uality of the publication. The printer's devil at work, or editorial oversight, has resulted in page 1 of paper 8 not being printed, plates 1 to 4 of paper 2 being included in paper 11 and 3 abstracts not listed in the table of contents being included as part of paper 7.
The 39 papers published are considerably less than the number presented at the Conference (approximately 90) and probably reflects a combination of delinquent authors failing to meet extended deadlines and unwillingness on the part of some authors to submit papers for publication subsequent to the apparent inability of the preceding 10th Caribbean Geological Conference to publish its Transactions.
The Transactions of the 11th Caribbean Geological Conference is a valuable update on the status of geological knowledge and research in the Caribbean and Latin America and a useful source of information on Caribbean and Latin America geology. In order to keep research alive in the Caribbean region and to disseminate information readily among Caribbean geoscientists it is important hat these Caribbean Geological Conferences be perpetuated. Ensuring that papers presented at these conferences are published in the Transactions within a relatively short time would make these conferences an attractive forum for both Caribbean and non-Caribbean geoscientists working in the region to publish the results of their work.
In formation on the cost and availability of the Transactions of the 11th Caribbean Geological Conference is available from the chairman Mr. Leslie Barker, Energy and Natural Resources Division, National Petroleum Corporation, Wildey, St. Michael, Barbados (tel.809-427-9806).
