MEMBERSHIP UPDATE
By Kim Gillezeau
|
A review of the amount of specialization among our members at present, compared with ten years
ago is illustrated in the accompanying pie charts. Only Trinidad and Tobago nationals were considered for this
compilation and an attempt was made to include those working overseas for whom we have some recent employment information.
The petroleum geologists dominate the the membership then as now, but in comparison with ten years ago, more of
our members now operate in specialized areas of the geosciences, both within and out-side of the petroleum industry.
This shift may reflect a focus on the use of new technology and specialized tools to optimize operational success.
It also marks a trend set by the petroleum sector to encourage the development of in-house expertise, by awarding
scholarships and through aggressive training programs to upgrade the level of skills, and so cut the former dependance
on "outside" expertise.
Gone are the days when the "expert" was always from abroad, he wore a suit and a tie, had good slides
and had no responsibility for the success or failure of any recommendations which he made. Today the success or
failure of many if not most local operations are squarely in the hands of local experts, of which the GSTT members
are proud to be significant players.
In the national elections of December 1991, two geologists were elected to serve in the highest offices in this
Republic and a third was appointed to the Senate. The GSTT extends congratulations to Prime Minister, Patrick Manning,
Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley and to Senator Dr. Harry Kuarsingh.
Two other members of the GSTT have recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of National Quarries Limited.
They are Mr. Ed Sealy (Chairman) and Hubert (Billy) Sukhu. The Executive committee of the GSTT wishes these gentlemen
every success in this endeavour.
Congratulations are also due to two members who have been awarded scholarships through the T&T Local Joint
Venture, for postgraduate studies. Later this year, members Steve Geetan and Helene Goberdan will take-up post-graduate
Scholarships in Structural Geology and Petrophysics respectively. Best wishes to them both.
