On June 16, 1992, this society held a one-day Symposium on the Regional Structure and Tectonic Evolution of Northern
Trinidad and Vicinity, at the Village Hall, Hotel Normandie, Port of Spain. At the Opening Ceremony, the Honourable
Senator, Mr. Barry Barnes, Minister of Energy and Energy-Based Industries, gave a stirring address to a gathering
of registered participants and specially invited guests.
The Symposium featured nine papers presented by Dr. R.C. Speed, R. Russo and J. Weber, of Northwestern University,
K. Foland, of Ohio State University, and 3. Lutchman of the Seismic Research Unit at St. . The importance of
unravelling the complicated history of this part of Trinidad, in order to accurately model the tectonic history
of the rest of the island and the region, in order to determine the implications for resource location, size and
distribution, was only one of the reasons why this ambitious project was undertaken.
GSTT President, Azad Khan, reemphasized the GSTT's committment to disseminating technical information of interest
to our membership, as well as the society's desire to maintain its position as the foremost professional body in
the region which actively supports and promotes discussions on new ideas and research material on the earth . To
make this important information assessable and affordable to a large cross-section, the executive committee decided
to subsidize the Symposium to a great extent, drawing down on funds generated from more profitable ventures run
in the past.
Moderators for the session were Clement Ramroop and Eric Williams. The session lasted the full day and was attended
by fifty-two persons. The papers from this Symposium will be published later this year and will be available to
the membership and the public at large.
The Thirteenth Caribbean Geological Conference will be held in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, from August l0th-14th, 1992.
Field trips will be run in the weeks before and after the conference. All correspondence should be sent to: Dr.
Jose A. Diaz, General Chairman, 13th Caribbean
Geol. Conference, Commercial Mercadu S.A. Calle 13 No.951, Esq.8, Ciudad de La Habana, CH-12300, Cuba.
The executive committee of the GSTT, after consultation with a cross-section of members, will seek to host the
Fourteenth Caribbean Geological Conference, carded for 1995, in conjunction with our own 3rd Geological Conference
of the GSTT, which is scheduled for the same year.
Dr. Kirton Rodrigues, the GSTT's representative on the committee for the Caribbean Geological Conferences, will
take our offer to the committee. He has submitted an abstract titled "The Naparima Hill - Cruse/Forest/Gros
Mome Petroleum System of Trinidad: A Quantitative Evaluation of Petroleum Generated" for the .
The AAPG/SVG International Congress and Exhibition, which will be held in Caracas from the l4th-l7th March, 1993,
has as its theme "Choices for the New World". The organizers intend for this conference to provide participants
with information on a broad range of topics including the Paleozoic prospects of South America. Short courses will
be held on exploration seismic for stratigraphic traps; sequence stratigraphy; structural traps; and sandstone
digenesis.
Abstracts of papers for presentation should have been received by the organizers by July 3rd, 1992, to be considered.
Correspondence can be sent to: AAPG Convention Department, P.O. Box 979, Tulsa, 0K74101-0979, U.S.A~ Tel:(918)584-2555
Fax:(918) 584-2274
The 1993 AAPG International Conference Will be sponsored jointly with the European Association of Petroleum and
Engineers and the Geological Survey of The Nether lands, and will be held at The Hague, from October 17-20, 1993.
The theme of the conference is "New Views on Old World Oil - Technology Leads the Way". The first call
for papers has gone out and Abstracts should be sent to: 1993 AAPG International Abstracts, AAPG Convention Department,
P.O. Box 979, Tulsa, OK 74101-0979, USA, by November 15, 1992.
The Trinidad and Tobago Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers has invited our membership to submit papers
on their original work for presentation at their 11th. Technical Conference and Exposition, to be held on June
23-25, 1993, at the Gulf City Auditorium, La Romain. The theme of the conference is "Energy Perspectives
for Trinidad and Tobago". This is an excellent opportunity for members to present papers either singly or
with their engineer colleagues on topical aspects of their work.
We have also been asked to inform our members of the staging of the following:
The Industrial Minerals International Congress, which will take place in San Francisco, California, from May l7th-2Oth,
1993. Interested persons can contact the organizers by telephone at number (212) 213-6202 or by fax at number (212)
213-6273.
The 4th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impact of Karst, which
will be held in Panama City, Florida, from January 25th-27th, 1993. The deadline for the receipt of abstracts is
June 15th, 1992, to facilitate the pre-printing of the Proceedings. The contact is -Dr. F. Beck, Florida Sinkholes
Research Institute, Research Building, Alpha University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL 32816 (Tel: 407 823-5645).

Social Events
The GSTT'S windball cricket team, lead by President Azad Khan, had a convincing win over
our colleagues from the SPE, on March 28, at the Trintoc P-a-P field. The final scores were - GSTT:48 and 90 runs
and SPE: 43 and 73 runs, all out. Top scorer for the GSTT were Francis Inniss and Larry Copilah. Attendance at
the game was disappointing and members, families and friends missed out on the brilliant sunshine, the excellent
catering and the fine day's .
On April 25, the SPE were able to exact their revenge by beating the GSTT team in the SPE Squash Tournament, held
at the Trintoc Pointe-a-Pierre squash courts. This tournament has been held annually since 1984 and although this
year was the best showing yet by a GSTT team, we still have a long way to go to win this competition. The eventual
winner was one of the two teams fielded by the Service Companies, made-up of John Holly, Rick Pontifex, Peter de
Verteuil and Andrew Ferreira.
