President's Report -for October 1990 to October 1991 Term
By H. TROY RAMBARRAN

Honored guests, fellow professionals, ladies and gentlemen, the executive year that has just ended was a fairly
successful one for the GSTT. Fifteen (15) executive meetings were held during this period, and in an effort to
increase knowledge and broaden our horizons, thirteen (13) technical sessions, covering subjects in the Extractive
Industries and Ceramics, Sequence Stratigraphy, Structural Geology, Legal Aspects of Joint Ventures, Computer Mapping
and Information Systems, Petroleum Exploration and Exploitation, were held. These sessions generated significant
discussions among the attendees.
Apart from these regular activities, the Editorial and Field Trip subcommittees were reactivated and in July 1991,
the 15th Edition of the GSTT Newsletter was published. Plans are well ahead for the publication of the 16th GSTT
Newsletter.
The Field Trip Committee is organizing a field trip to Eastern Venezuela during the month of March 1992, and similarly,
the Education Committee has set in place a three (3) day school, "Geology for Non-Geologist" to be conducted
by members of the GSTT, early next year. The Society also held a Bar-B-Que dinner on April 13, 1991, at the TRINTOC
Yacht Club, Pointe-a-Pierre. At this stage I am pleased to report that the publication of the, proceedings of the
2nd Geological Conference of the GSTT and Symposium on the Cretaceous, held in April 1991, is 90% completed, and
will be released during the month of November 1991.
Along the line of Seminars, the GSTT provided financial assistance to the Quarry Association of Trinidad and Tobago,
to host a very successful one day seminar, "Quarrying and Earth-Extractive Industry in Trinidad and Tobago:
Focus on Industrial Minerals", which was held on April 3rd, 1991, at the La Joya complex, St. Joseph.
Inspite of these successes there was one target area where the GSTT was unsuccessful- the GSTT has not yet established
an office. Many possibilities were investigated, however, in most instances, the cost was beyond our means. I am
hoping that with our renewed efforts and the support of our Corporate members, this office will shortly become
a reality.
Current financial membership in the GSTT now stands at 93 and includes 11 Corporate members. On behalf of the GSTT,
I now welcome our latest Corporate member, K. Persad and Associates.
Enough has been said about the past, tonight is the time to look to the future and the 21st century. Our guest
speaker is Mr. Trevor Boopsingh, Chairman of Fertrin and Lecturer in Petroleum Engineering at the University of
the West Indies. Because of his experiences and his involvement in the Hydrocarbon Industry, he is in an excellent
position to advise on how we may prepare ourselves for the 21st century.
In closing I would like to thank members of the past executive and other members for their support, and in particular
Mr. Azad Khan,
Chairman of the Technical Sub-. I also wish the incoming President and executive every success in their term of
office. I know that we can look forward to an active and enlightening year.
