President's Report :
For November 1991 - November1992

By AZAD KHAN

Mr. Prime Minister and Mrs. Manning, other honored guests, fellow members of the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our Dinner/Dance and Awards Ceremony 1992.
As the outgoing President, it is incumbent on me to give an account of the Society's activity for 1991/1992. It is up to you to determine the degree of success of our governing team during our stewardship.
Eleven (11) executive and two (2) extraordinary meetings were held during the past year in order to formulate and direct the affairs of the Geological Society. Six (6) subcommittees were activated during our tenure, as follows:
(1) Technical, (2) Field Trip (3) Editorial (4) Education (5) Membership (6) Entertainment
(2) I shall now give a brief report on each of these subcommittees.

Technical
Nine (9) technical sessions were held in 1992. The topics covered Geological Aspects Of Trinidad and Tobago, Industrial Rocks and Minerals, Recent Petrological Advances, Integrated Computer technology, state---of the-Art well logging techniques, academic opportunities in the
Geosciences and a case history of a Steam Flood project.

Field Trip
Four (4) field trips were organized during the dry season. The first was to the eastern part of the Northern range and was held jointly with the Field Naturalists Club.
The second led us to the Fishing Pond Coastal area and the western part of the Central Range, to examine young Tertiary outcrops. This trip was sponsored by corporate member, Schlumberger Trinidad Inc.
The third expedition covered Crondstat Island, Gaspar Grande and Chacachacare. Co-leaders were Francis Inniss and John Scott, former Chief Geologist at the Ministry of Energy and Energy-Based Industries.
The fourth trip was led by Carol Telemaque, Anthony Richardson and Steve Geetan, and was to the Guayaguayare and Goudron areas.

Editorial
Transactions of the Second Geological Conference of the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago was published in 1991. There has been a steady demand for copies since our advertisement in the AAPG EXPLORER Magazine. Additionally, Newsletters number 16 and 17 were published and distributed to members.
Education
In February, the GSTT held a three-day seminar tided "Geology for Non-geologists." The course aimed to provide a basic geological background for non-geologists who work with geologists in the work environment. The seminar was over-subscribed.
A symposium titled "The Regional Structure and Tectonic Evolution of Northern Trinidad and Vicinity" was held on June 16, at Hotel Normandie. The Honorable Minister of Energy and Energy-based Industries, Mr. Barry Barnes, gave the opening address. Nine (9) papers were presented which were based on extensive new fieldwork and seismic data, and incorporating the most recent interpretations of the geology, structure and tectonic evolution of the region. The presenters included world-renowned earth scientists, Dr. Robert Speed and Kenneth Foland. Fifty-eight (57) persons attended the symposium.
Commencing this year, the GSTT will grant a bursary worth $5000 annually to a deserving student pursuing studies in the earth sciences. Details are being finalized with the UWI Development and Endowment Fund.
The career guidance lecture series was conducted at various schools, together with the
SPE.

Membership
The function of this subcommittee was two-fold:
a) to keep members informed on the affairs of the GSTT
b) to build membership in the GSTT.
Membership now stands at 279, including 20 corporate members, as compared with 264 members, including 11 corporate members in 1991.

Entertainment
A parang party was held at the TRINTOC Yacht Club on December 7, 1991. Entertainment was provided by the band "Por Gusto", a D.J. and an appearance by Marcia Miranda.
The GSTT played a windball cricket match against the SPE on March28 and won handsomely. We also participated in the Annual SPE squash tournament.
A football and ALL-fours fixture versus the SPE, carded for September 12, 1992, was canceled at the last moment by the SPE. Perhaps some members of their executive could produce a more plausible excuse than preparing for a Panel Discussion on the TRINTOC-TRINTOPEC Merger?

So much for the activities of the GSTT during the 1991/92 term of office. I would like to thank all the members of the past executives and the sub-committees for their support. In particular, I wish to thank Mrs. Kim Gillezeau, Troy Rambarran and Francis Inniss for their contributions. In closing, I wish the incoming President, Mr. Eric Williams, and his executive, every success in their term of office.

To function effectively a group such as ours depends upon the participation of its members. Recognition is afforded to all those who have contributed, no matter what the form. Bur awards are granted only to those who have excelled.
