The Technical Sub-Committee for 1993 will focus on applied technical presentations on different aspects of geology, with special emphasis on petroleum exploration, industrial minerals and the environment. Some members have already indicated their commitment to present papers on the following topics: Regional Basin Analysis, Field Excursion in a Thrusted Area, and Resource Estimation involving computerised techniques.
We have proposed a subdivision of the technical presentations for this term into two basic formats. Format 1 will take the form of Luncheon Meetings at which we will seek to have distinguished lecturers with a bias in petroleum exploration, particularly relating to current thinking and applications to finding oil and gas in old and new fields. The AAPG and the SEG have already been contacted with respect to sourcing lecturers from these organisations. Format 2 will encompass the regular meetings that we are accustomed to. With the present day focus on industrial minerals (the construction industry) and the environment, it is our hope to attract contributions from qualified members of the Society. We would welcome papers from members and non-members alike, especially those willing to present on topics covering novel research applications to solving common day problems.
The seminar series will begin with a technical presentation by Laurent de Verteuil from the University of Toronto, Canada, on the topic "A New Dinoflagellate Cyst Sequence Biostratigraphic Framework For the Miocene of the Baltimore Canyon Trough and Adjacent Salisbury Embayment". This presentation covers the development of a model for the Miocene depositional history of the area and there may be analogies to the equivalent geologic time in the Trinidad area.
A more detailed program of proposed technical presentations will be sent to members shortly.
