FOREST RESERVE

This subsurface mudflow was penetrated in 1943 by Fr 686, which drilled 700 ft. of mudflow deposits
before penetrating Cruse sediments. Subsequent drilling proved the existence of a lenticular mass which is roughly
circular in outline with a diameter of 4,000 ft. and a maximum thickness of more that 4,000 ft.. The volume is
estimated to be 500 million cubic yards. The mudflow (from full hole core), is a breccia of clay and marl fragments
in an oil impregnated calcareous clay matrix. The microfauna indicate that the clay is of Middle Cipero age. The
mudflow mass is believed to be interbedded and to have been deposited an island during a period of tectonic disturbance
at the end of Cruse deposition. (The geology of Texaco Forest Reserve Field, Trinidad, W.I. - T.H. Bower, Transactions 4th Caribbean Geological Conference, p.75-86) |
